Korean BBQ Chicken I Dak Bulgogi Recipe

Bulgogi is a Korean dish that usually consists of grilled marinated beef or chicken. Dak mean chicken in Korean; hence the name is ‘Dak Bulgogi’. Traditionally bulgogi is grilled but it can be pan cooked.

For making Korean Dak Bulgogi, you will need;

  • Chicken – ½ kg (It is optional to use chicken drumsticks, you can use small chicken pieces instead)
  • Black sesame seeds for garnish (Optional)

For marinade, you will need;

Korean bulgogi sauce

  • Korean hot pepper paste (gochujang) – 2 tbsp
  • Soy sauce – 2 tbsp
  • Brown sugar – 2 tbsp
  • Corn syrup – 2 tbsp
  • Sesame oil – 1 tbsp
  • Roasted sesame seeds – 1/2 tbsp
  • Vinegar – 1 tsp
  • Cloves of garlic – 3 big (minced)
  • Ginger – 1 inch piece (minced)
  • Little salt and black pepper powder

How to make Korean BBQ chicken or Dak Bulgogi?

  • Remove the skin of chicken and make some slits on pieces.
  • Wash pieces thoroughly under cold running water and pat dry them.

Korean BBQ sauce

  • Make the marinade by combining all ingredients listed above. Mix well and your BBQ sauce is ready.

  • Pour BBQ sauce into chicken pieces and mix well.

  • Cover it with plastic wrap and allow it to rest on counter for at least an hour.
  • After an hour, heat up a tbsp of cooking oil in a pan.

  • Place marinated chicken drumsticks in a pan. Cover it up and cook for 5-6 minutes until one side is nice brown.
  • Flip all pieces with tong and cook from other side as well. Both sides should be nice brown. Pour the remaining sauce on top while chicken is cooking.
  • Total cooking time may take around 15-20 minutes.

Korean BBQ chicken recipe

  • Switch off the heat sprinkle some black sesame seeds on top.
  • Serve Korean BBQ chicken hot with radish salad (musaengchae).

For making spicy Korean radish salad or musaengchae, you will need;

  • Korean radish – 1 cup (Cut into thin and long strips)
  • Green onion – 2 (finely chopped)
  • Korean hot pepper paste (gochujang) – 2 tsp
  • Brown sugar – 1 tsp
  • Anchovy sauce – 1/2 tbsp
  • Soy sauce – ½ tbsp
  • Cloves of garlic – 1 big (minced)
  • Little salt and black pepper powder
  • Black sesame seeds – 1/2 tsp

Mix all above ingredients together and spicy radish salad is ready.
